South Wales Alliance League exists at levels 5-7 in the Welsh football pyramid as the regional league that covers the area under the South Wales FA jurisdiction (although the SWAL is not directly managed by the SWFA). Champions, subject to ground criteria, are promoted to the Welsh Football League.
The SWAL was formed in 2015 as a merger between the two historic regional leagues in the South Wales FA area: South Wales Senior League and South Wales Amateur League. Historically, the champions of these leagues met in an annual play-off to determine promotion to the Welsh Football League.
The W John Owen Cup is the annual league challenge cup for the SWAL, involving every club in the three divisions. It was carried over from the South Wales Amateur League with the merger.
